Subject, Verb, Complement, and Modifier

Subject

Subject merupakan salah satu unsur yang penting di dalam kalimat. Subject dapat didefinisikan dengan siapa (who) atau apa (what). Subject merupakan siapa atau apa yang melakukan suatu kegiatan/ aksi di dalam kalimat. Subject dalam kalimat dapat berupa kata benda (noun), frasa kata benda (noun phrase), atau pun kata ganti (pronoun).

There are some examples of sentences in English sentences.

·         ➔Janet washed the car.

Janet = subject

Washed = action performed

·         ➔Chris worked from sunrise to sunset.

Chris = subject

Worked = action performed

Verb

Verb atau kata kerja menurut oxford dictionary Verb is a word used to discribe an action, state or accurance. Dengan bahasa lain, verb atau kata kerja merupakan suatu kata yang mendeskripsikan subjek itu sendiri atupun menunjukan sebuah peristiwa dan keadaan. 

Examples of verbs in a sentence: 

1. Mark eats his dinner quickly.
2. We went to the market.
3. You write neatly in your notebook.
4. They thought about all the prizes in the competition

Complement

Complement adalah sebuah kata atau lebih yang berfungsi untuk melengkapi makna atau memberi keterangan terhadap Subject, Verb dan juga Object. Complement dibagi menjadi dua yaitu Subject Complement dan Object Complement. Yang dimaksud dengan Subject Complement adalah sebuah kata atau frasa yang memberi keterangan terhadap subject dari sebuah kalimat. Sebuah subject complement akan selalu mengikuti sebuah linking verb seperti: to be, to feel, to become, to taste, to smell, to look,  dan juga to appear.  Object Complement adalah adjective (kata sifat) atau noun (kata benda) yang muncul setelah direct object dalam sebuah kalimat dan memberikan keterangan terhadap direct object tersebut. 

Subject complements

• My uniform is torn and dirty.
• My uniform is a T-shirt and jeans.
• "Imagination is the one weapon in the war against reality."(Jules de Gaultier)
• "Love is an exploding cigar we willingly smoke." (Lynda Barry)

Object complements

• Jimmy's teacher called him a troublemaker.
• The teacher's remark made me angry.
• "The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other names, too."  (Mark Twain, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, 1885)

Modifier

Modifier adalah kata, phrase, atau clause yang berfungsi sebagai adjective atau adverb yang menerangkan kata atau kelompok kata lain.

• Fungsi sebagai adjective (dapat berupa simple adjective, adjective phrase, clause, participle atau infinitive): menerangkan noun
• Fungsi sebagai adverb (dapat berupa simple adverb, adverb phrase, clause, prepositional phrase atau infinitive): menerangkan verb, adjective atau adverb lain.

Examples of modifier in a Sentence

·        ➔ In “a red hat,” the adjective “red” is a modifier describing the noun “hat.” 

·        ➔ In “They were talking loudly,” the adverb “loudly” is a modifier of the verb “talking.”
